Just like that, the cold and flu season is here and now there is a new, very contagious virus thrown into the mix. It is so important for all of us to take the necessary precautions to stay healthy, stop the spread of COVID-19, and keep our immune systems in tiptop shape.
Here are 6 very simple habits that are sure to help you stay healthy this cold and flu season.
1. Wash your hands
Yes—the tip we have been hearing over and over again, but it can’t be left out! So many illnesses are spread from unclean hands and sacrificing a few minutes a day will help keep you and everyone around you healthy and illness-free. Go one step further and keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer or hand wipes with you when you go out in public.
2. Stop touching your face
This habit goes hand-in-hand with washing your hands, but touching your face is a very tough habit to break. Most face-touching is a subconscious reaction, but it’s one of the fastest ways to get yourself sick. Try staying cognizant of when your hand goes towards your face, especially when you are out in public or your hands are not clean.
3. Clean frequently touched surfaces in your home
From door knobs to light switches, there are some things in our home that we touch without a second thought, and these surfaces are often overlooked when we clean. Walk yourself through a normal day and notice all the things you touch, especially when you get home and you haven’t washed your hands yet.
4. Eat healthy
Eating healthy foods and maintaining a healthy weight is a great way to support your immune system. Healthy foods are packed with vitamins and minerals like Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and zinc that help your body fight viruses and bacteria.

Exercising contributes to a healthy lifestyle and helps your body flush out bacteria that could make you sick. In addition, exercise improves circulation and lowers blood pressure, both of which help your body fight illnesses.
6. Get enough sleep
People who do not get enough sleep are more susceptible to catching a virus and having a harder time recovering. Your immune system also releases proteins while you sleep that help reduce inflammation and even stress, both of which are very beneficial to your immune health.
If you find yourself getting sick several times a year without fail, we highly recommend practicing these habits to protect your immune system and stay healthy. Check out our blog for more information on naturally navigating the cold and flu season.
